Philip Rankin has been teaching piano for over 15 years.  He is a fun, energetic and passionate teacher.  Having worked with students of all ages throughout Southern California.  His goal is to engage his students to create a passion for music, and a life-long bond to playing the piano.  Phil has developed his own comprehensive method for learning to read music and playing piano, and is currently working on publishing it. Philip’s latest project, ØCOASTensemble, mixes modular synthesis and jazz improvisation. He has also recently released a solo of album of recordings he made using four-track tape recorder and all his different instruments. Philip is also an accomplished composer and arranger, having written over 30 compositions for different-sized ensembles, including Salsa bands, jazz bands and Chamber ensembles.

He holds his Master in Fine Arts in Jazz Studies and his Bachelors in Fine Arts in Classical Piano from the California Institute of the Arts, Herb Alpert School of Music.

When not teaching and playing piano, you can find Phil down at the L.A. River looking for birds, riding his bicycle in Griffith Park, and documenting his life with his assortment of old film Cameras.
